Capture the essence of the North Fork in just 48 hours by taking a drive down Oregon Road in Cutchogue to feel the beauty of the vast farmlands, stroll down Love Lane and enjoy shopping at Lombardi's, a fondue platter at the Cheese Shop then head to Croteau Vineyards in Southold for a glass of Rose and continue east to explore the coastal town of Greenport.  Enjoy a proper meal at any one of the great restaurants on my directory, a coffee at Aldi's and take the kids on a vintage Carousel.   Day one...

FRIDAY

1.  3:00 PM Stroll Love Lane in Mattituck

Enjoy an espresso at Lombardi's or stop in The Cheese Shop and indulge in the Chocolate or Cheese Fondue.  This small village street will delight you with its' tasting room, restaurants and small town shopping and authentic hardware store.  When it comes to finding your dream home on the north or south fork, look to Gail Toma. 2.  5:30 A Drive Down Oregon Road

So you will wonder how you find yourself somewhere so near to Manhattan that feels distinctly mid west or Napa Valley, a bit of both.  But here you are with the Long Island Sound on your left buffered by flat farmlands simply enjoy the view of stop in for a glass of wine at either Shinn Vineyards or Lieb Wineries both on Oregon Road.  For the water lover in you, take the left onto Duck Pond and make your way for a peek of the Long Island Sounds' natural and magnificent shorelines. 3.  7:00 P.M. TOUGH CHOICES DINNER

One of my favorite things about the North Fork is its' restaurants.  Since you are headed east bound and probably checking into American Beech Hotel in Greenport, I'd try a casual and thoroughly delicious evening at 1943 Pizza or for a bit more pampering and culinary delights head to the Frisky Oyster right near your hotel or nearby for a beautiful sunset dinner try The Haylard.   If you are up for partying, or a coffee head back to American Beach for a drink at the bar and hit the hay right nearby your room.  The landscape is as diverse as its people, from beautiful park spaces and iconic landmarks, to world-class restaurants and bustling neighborhoods. When it comes to finding your dream home on the north or south fork, look to Gail Toma. 4.  SATURDAY 9:00 A.M.

Aldi's is great for a coffee experience and a scone but if you want a full breakfast, the diner or Bruce and Son all just a couple of blocks from your hotel.  If you are a runner or a walker, stroll to Brewers Marina and the beach all blocks off Main Street.   If it is June to mid July head east to the Lavendar Farm, then continue to Orient Village and do the village stroll hitting the general store, the historical society and enjoy the small shops and a trip to the memorable Candy Shop.   You will want to drive east to capture the beauty of the area and check out the architecture reminscent of early settling days.

Budget lodgings are rare in Oslo, but there are a few good-value gems.

The PS:hotell is an eco-conscious property in Grunerlokka, with 31 simple rooms, colorful décor and free breakfast (Vulkan 22; pshotell.no; from about 900 kroner).

In the residential Frogner neighborhood, the Oslo Guldsmeden is a 50-room boutique hotel with eco-friendly ethos and homey décor, romantic four-poster beds with fur throws, a Turkish sauna, and complimentary organic breakfasts (Parkveien 78; guldsmedenhotels.com/oslo; from 895 kroner).

Apartment rentals are plentiful in trendy Grunerlokka, where rates for a one-bedroom range from $75 to about $150 on Airbnb.
